“How should the heritage of this land be defined?”
Heritage has long been regarded as something to be preserved, frozen in time. However, heritage is not simply an object that bears witness to the past.
It is a collective memory that traverses eras and a cultural product of a community’s accumulated imagination about the future. We encounter this ‘old future’ when the traces of time that have passed penetrate the sensibilities of today and reasoning for tomorrow. Heritage is not the end of the past, but the potential of imagination about the future.
In 2024, the South Korean government changed the terminology and concept from ‘cultural property’ to ‘national heritage,’ setting a new institutional milestone regarding national heritage.
This is a declaration that the country will expand heritage from merely an object of preservation into a public asset that all citizens can enjoy, imagine, and reconstruct. This is also a commitment to develop a new heritage system that encompasses the memories of future generations, alongside cultural, natural, and intangible heritage.
The HERITAGE: THE FUTURE FANTASY exhibition was planned in this transitional phase, interpreting the significance of heritage through audiovisual and digital senses. Through this exhibition, media art and video materials that have been accumulated over the years by the Korea Heritage Service and the Korea Heritage Agency are woven into a single narrative. The aim is to reimagine national heritage as sustainable content, which combines tangible heritage, media art, performances, and kinetic art.
The exhibition shines a new light on the potential of cultural, natural, and intangible Heritage of Korea. The magnificent records written on the Uigwe (The Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty); the radiant light and glistening water of Korea’s landscapes; the dignified touch and craftsmanship of traditional artisans; and the flowing wave of continuity embodied in heritage all raise the questions: “What memories will we inherit?”, “To what future can these
memories lead?”
Heritage no longer dwells in the past. This exhibition proposes new possibilities for heritage through a combination of digital sensibilities, expanded temporality, and responsive technology and imagination. In HERITAGE: THE FUTURE FANTASY, national heritage is not static within the time frame but is on a journey towards a fantastical future.
