This performance is presented in celebration of the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, bringing together Korea’s foremost masters and performers to welcome guests from around the world.


Featuring the UNESCO-inscribed intangible cultural heritage as well as Busan’s traditions

and the soul-stirring artistry of Jang Sa-ik, the program offers a vivid encounter with the distinctive spirit and beauty of Korean tradition.


This special performance provides a meaningful opportunity to explore the transmission, locality, community, and contemporary expansion of Korea’s intangible cultural heritage.

○ (Royal) The Dignity of Ritual and Music | Jongmyo Jeryeak

  * Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008

  - Jongmyo Jeryeak is a royal court art that embodies East Asian philosophy and order through ritual within the architectural space of the Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage. Integrating instrumental music, ritual dance (ilmu), and song, this centuries-old tradition is a vibrant living heritage that breathes life into the historic site to this day.

○ (Transmission) From Voice to Voice, From Heart to Heart | Pansori

  * Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008

  - Pansori is a genre of musical storytelling where a solo singer performs a lengthy narrative accompanied by the steady beat of a buk(a traditional Korean drum). It transmits its quintessence through gujeonsimsu—the traditional practice of passing down the art from master to disciple by word of mouth and heart to heart—vividly conveying the full spectrum of Korean emotions.

  - Cast : Kim Il-gu, Holder of the National Intangible Heritage Pansori

    * Holder: In Korea, "Holders" are masters officially recognized by the state for their expertise in safeguarding and transmitting intangible cultural heritage.


○ (Folk) Melodies of Improvisation | Sinawi

  - Sinawi is a traditional Korean ensemble where performers create spontaneous harmony by listening to one another without a fixed melody. Originating from ritual music, it continues to serve as an inspiration for contemporary culture, including ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ and various other media.

  - Cast : Uri-Sori Baraji, a Korean traditional music ensemble inspired by Jindo Ssitgimgut(ritual music from Jindo Island), a National Intangible Heritage


○ (Local) Busan in Motion | Dongnae Hakchum

  - Dongnae Hakchum is a local dance that embodies the elegance and leisure enjoyed by the scholars of the Dongnae district in Busan. This local intangible cultural heritage vividly reflects Busan’s identity by reinterpreting the graceful movements of the crane—a symbol of longevity and peace in the East—into a folk dance.

  - Cast : Dongnae Hakchum Preservation Society, including Lee Sung-hoon, Holder of the Busan Intangible Cultural Heritage Dongnae Hakchum

  - Cast : Korea Heritage Agency Performing Arts Group


○ (Witty Delight) Thrill on the Tightrope | Jultagi (Namsadang Nori)

  * Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009

  - Jultagi (tightrope walking) of Namsadang Nori is a traditional Korean performance where an eoreumsani (tightrope walker) performs daring feats along with witty dialogue. Beyond mere technical skill, it is a communicative art form that shares humor and joy through active engagement with the audience.

  - Cast : Kwon Won-tae, Instructor for Successor Training of the National Intangible Heritage Namsadang Nori


○ (Creativity) Tradition Reimagined | Jang Sa-ik

  - Jang Sa-ik’s music is an original genre that blurs the boundaries of musical styles by merging traditional Korean vocal techniques with contemporary sensibilities. By infusing the essence of Korean sentiment with the joys and sorrows of modern life, he expands the horizons of tradition and resonates deeply with the public.

○ (Community) Resounding Together | Nongak

  * Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014

  - Nongak is a folk art in which village members come together to perform music, dance, and acrobatics to pray for a bountiful harvest and well-being of community. By breaking the boundaries between performers and spectators, it creates a dynamic festival that fosters community unity through collective participation.

  - Cast : Gumi Mueul Nongak Preservation Society


○ Emcee : Oh Jung-hae (Actress, Certified Trainee of the National Intangible Heritage Pansori)

  ○ Seating is unassigned and available on a first-come, first-served basis.Admission for ages 8 and above.

  ○ Up to 5 tickets may be reserved per person.

  ○ Late entry may be restricted to ensure an uninterrupted viewing experience.

  ○ Photography, video recording, and food or drinks are prohibited during the performance.

  ○ Official photography and video recording may take place for promotional and archival purposes, and audience members may appear in the footage.
