Juldarigi: Tugging Rituals and Games in Korea and Three Other Southeast Asian Countries

This book, published in 2015, is part of the K-Heritage series and covers Juldarigi, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in the same year.

Tug of war is a cultural practice in which two teams gripping opposite ends of a rope pull forcefully until one drags the other across a central line to determine the winner. The rope can be made from diverse materials, including rice straw, rattan, bamboo, young branches, vines, grass, hemp, and animal hide. Anything that can be secured locally may be used for crafting a rope.
